Willard Zangwill, PhD, Founder

Willard Zangwill is an emeritus professor of management science at the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business. He has previously taught on the faculties of the University of California, Berkeley, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and American University, and he has sat on the boards of directors at Systems Software and the Institute for Professional Education.

Prof. Zangwill has spent decades conducting research on complex decisions, operations, and strategy. He has pioneered the systematic analysis of inconsistencies and discrepancies in human decisions, leading him to develop metrics that estimate the probability of surprise, risk and the quality of decision. His software, which utilizes, statistical Bayesian algorithms, has been deployed by major corporations as well as the intelligence apparatus of the United States government.

Prof. Zangwill holds a PhD in operations research and an MS in statistics from Stanford University, as well as a BA in physics (magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa) from Columbia University. He is the author of four books on strategic and statistical processes, and has been published in more than 50 periodicals including The Wall Street Journal. One of his pieces was selected as one of the top 50 in the first 50 years of Management Science.

Jon Chait, Director & Partner

Jon F. Chait is a consultant to private equity and commercial firms on a variety of subjects, including mergers & acquisitions, strategic planning, macroeconomics, and labor economics. Jon is currently Chairman of the Board of Directors of Nordic Consulting Partners, Inc., which specializes in implementation of EPIC’s Electronic Medical Records software. Jon is also currently the Lead Manager of the Board of Managers of Digital Intelligence, Inc. (DISYS), a nationwide provider of IT Staffing and Solutions.

Jon spent nearly a decade as CEO and Chairman of the Board at Hudson Global, Inc. (2003 – 2013). He has also served in both these roles for Spring Group plc, a UK-based provider of workforce management solutions (2000 – 2002), and Magenta Limited, a developer of web-enabled human resource solutions which he founded and sold to Spring Group (1998 – 2000).

Between 1989 and 1998, Jon held several senior executive positions with Manpower, Inc., including managing director, executive vice president, and chief financial officer. He has served on the boards of Krueger (1984 – 2007), Manpower (1991 – 1998), Marshall & Ilsley Corp. (1989 – 2011), and the University of California at Los Angeles School of Law (1998 – present).

Jon holds a BA (magna cum lauda, Phi Beta Kappa) and a JD from the University of California at Los Angeles, where he served as articles editor for the UCLA Law Review.

Michael Lowenthal, Director & Partner

Since 2003, Mike Lowenthal has advised several small businesses in construction, software development, manufacturing, and “green” consulting. In addition, he has worked as a consultant to the University of Chicago budget office and to the inspector general of the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.

From 1988 to 2003, Mike was the CEO and primary owner of two medium-sized manufacturing companies, a steel fabricator and a window manufacturer. Both were sold to outside investors, and Mike continued to operate the window company for its new owners through 2004. Prior to this, Mike held various positions with Fortune 500 companies Allied Tube & Conduit and Abbott Laboratories. He has also spent time performing audit and tax work for with a CPA firm.

A certified public accountant, Mike holds a B.S. in accounting from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and an MBA in finance from the University of Chicago.
